Who We Are

Reclaim the Scene is collective of LGBTQ activists working to create a more accessible, friendly and welcoming space for LGBTQ people in Manchester. We give our time voluntarily and receive no financial reward for taking part—we do it for love, not money. We want:

  • An accessible, friendly and welcoming scene
  • Pride to be free (are we too poor to be gay?)
  • LGBTQ rights to be at the top of the agenda

Aims

After Pride 2009, we asked people for feedback on what we should be aiming to change about Pride in Manchester. From these we established our future direction and our short- and long- term aims.

Short Term Aims

  • Conduct robust research into how Pride could be free.
  • Under 18s to go to Pride for free
  • Youth/ Lifestyle/ Stalls spaces to be outside ticketed areas so everyone can gain access to them.
  • Community, charity and political stalls should not have to pay.
  • Ensure the marketing makes the event seem as accessible as possible.
  • Carers to go for free / disabled people's discount.
  • Make it free for community and charitable groups to march in the parade.
  • Alan Horsfall - founder of the first gay rights organisation in Britain in 1964 should be invited to lead the community float.
  • Organising meetings of Pride to be open to all members of the community.

Long Term Aims

  • Pride to be free
  • LGBTQ rights to be at the top of the agenda.
  • For a welcoming, accessible and friendly scene.
  • Barriers to come down

If you like what you've seen so far and you want to be part of it, then read on to our page on how to help. We're a non-hierarchical collective so we invite and encourage new people to get stuck in and get involved!
